What Can You Do With It?

Students suggest original and creative uses for everyday objects, practising modal verbs (can/could) in meaningful context.
Procedure
- Reveal an everyday object to the class (e.g., a paper bag, a hammer, a pram, an empty tin can, a mirror, a table).
- Ask: How can you use a paper bag?
- Students suggest uses:
- You can put things in it.
- You can light a fire with it.
- You can blow in it and then make a bang!
- You could make it into a ball and throw it at someone!
- Continue with different objects, encouraging creative and humorous ideas.
Tips
- Use actual objects rather than written descriptions or pictures for best engagement.
- Write key sentence frames on the board: You can... / You could... / You can/could make ... with it.
- Group variation: give each group the same object and challenge them to write down as many uses as possible. After 5-10 minutes, pool and compare — which group had the most or most original ideas?
- Encourage fun and invention — the more playful the responses, the better.
