Simple Selfies

Students read example selfie captions, practise typical expressions, then take selfies with a partner and collaboratively write captions to publish.

Procedure

1. Show students several example selfie captions (2-3 sentences each). Highlight useful phrases: "Here I am...", "This is me...", "Here we are...", "I love this..." Have students match captions to photos or discuss what each caption describes.
2. Put students into pairs or threes. They take a selfie of themselves and collaboratively write a caption with two or three sentences (or just phrases for A1 level).
3. Put pairs together to read and compare each other's captions.
4. Students can publish selfies on their own social media, a class blog, or learning management system.

• Real-world transfer: students practise something they can actually do in English online
• Great for building group dynamics early in a course — students learn about each other
• Provides an authentic purpose for both writing and reading
• Students need mobile phones for this activity
