Adjectives on the Internet
readingwritingspeakingaccuracypracticeindividualnone prep20-30 min
Students search online for interesting real-world contexts of comparative adjective forms, then share the funniest or most original examples.
Procedure
- Brainstorm as many adjectives as the class can think of (up to about 30) and write them on the board.
- Each student selects one adjective and writes down its comparative form.
- They search online for this form and find five different contexts in which it is used. Contexts must be clearly understood and interesting or funny.
- Each student presents their most interesting example. Who found the funniest or most original context?
Tips
- It's fine for two or more students to choose the same adjective — results will likely differ.
- Students can search on their devices in class or at home, bringing results to the next lesson.
- Do the same with superlative forms as a variation.
- Can be adapted to practise almost any vocabulary item or grammatical form, not just comparatives.
- A natural stepping stone to introducing students to online corpus tools for more refined searches.
