Joint Construction

Teacher and class co-write a text together on the board, negotiating content and language.

Procedure

  1. Analyse a model text of the target genre together (stage 1: deconstruction).
  2. Choose a new topic for the same genre.
  3. Teacher scribes on the board; students suggest content, wording, and structure.
  4. Teacher guides decisions: "What should we say next?" "How can we say this more formally?"
  5. Final text stays on the board as a reference for students' independent writing.

Tips

  • This is stage 2 of the Teaching and Learning Cycle (before independent writing).
  • Don't rush to stage 3 — this scaffolded phase is where weaker writers benefit most.
