Groups analyse a problem and negotiate a solution through discussion. Also called: Event Planning Task.
Procedure
- Present the problem scenario to the class.
- Individual thinking time (2 min).
- Pair sharing — compare initial ideas (5 min).
- Group discussion — reach consensus on a solution (15 min).
- Each group presents their solution and reasoning to the class.
Scenario Examples
- Survival: Desert island — choose 5 items from 15 to survive
- Budget: Plan a class trip for $2,500 — allocate funds across transport, food, activities
- Workplace: Distribute limited staff across three competing projects
Tips
- Choose problems with multiple valid solutions to generate genuine debate.
- Assign roles (facilitator, timekeeper, note-taker, presenter) to ensure participation.
- The best scenarios connect to students' real-world experience.
