Problem-Solving Tasks

Groups analyse a problem and negotiate a solution through discussion. Also called: Event Planning Task.

Procedure

1. Present the problem scenario to the class.
2. Individual thinking time (2 min).
3. Pair sharing — compare initial ideas (5 min).
4. Group discussion — reach consensus on a solution (15 min).
5. Each group presents their solution and reasoning to the class.

Scenario Examples

• Survival: Desert island — choose 5 items from 15 to survive
• Budget: Plan a class trip for $2,500 — allocate funds across transport, food, activities
• Workplace: Distribute limited staff across three competing projects

Tips

• Choose problems with multiple valid solutions to generate genuine debate.
• Assign roles (facilitator, timekeeper, note-taker, presenter) to ensure participation.
• The best scenarios connect to students' real-world experience.
