Extensive Reading

Students self-select and read large quantities of easy, enjoyable texts for pleasure.

Procedure

1. Build a class library of graded readers at and below students' level.
2. Students choose their own books — no assigned texts.
3. Dedicate 15-20 minutes of class time to silent reading.
4. Students keep a simple reading log (title, pages, brief reaction).
5. Optional: brief book talks where students recommend reads to classmates.

Tips

• The texts must be EASY — 98% known vocabulary. If students are looking up words, the text is too hard.
• No comprehension tests — pleasure reading only.
