Collocation Reconstruction

readingvocabularyaccuracypracticepairsmedium prep10-15 min

After reading a text, students fill in blanked-out collocations from memory.

Procedure

  1. Students read and work with a text (comprehension, discussion, etc.).
  2. Give them a version with key collocations blanked out (e.g., "make a …", "… advantage of").
  3. Pairs reconstruct the collocations from memory.
  4. Check against the original.
  5. Discuss any collocations they got wrong or didn't know.

Tips

  • Blank the LESS predictable half of the collocation — "take …" is too easy, but "… advantage" forces recall of the verb.
