Problem-Solving Speaking

speakingcommunicationmainsmall-grouplow prep15-20 minTBLT

Small groups discuss a real-life dilemma, negotiate, and reach agreement.

Procedure

  1. Present a written worksheet with background, problem, and required outcome type.
  2. Groups discuss and work toward agreement.
  3. Groups report back and justify their solution.

Six Outcome Types

  1. Suggest -- generate a list of solutions.
  2. Choose -- select the best option from alternatives.
  3. Rank -- order items by given criteria.
  4. Decide -- make a yes/no decision.
  5. Locate -- place items on a map or timeline.
  6. Arrange -- organise items to meet requirements.

Tips

  • Embed ~10 target vocabulary words in the worksheet (150-300 words total).
  • Avoid numbering items on the worksheet -- force learners to use descriptive language.
  • Use pyramid procedure (individual, pair, group, class) to maximise speaking time.
