Pyramid Discussion

Opinion builds from individual to pairs to fours to class, reaching consensus at each stage.

Procedure

  1. Pose a question or dilemma; students form their own opinion (2 min).
  2. Discuss in pairs; reach agreement (3 min).
  3. Pairs merge into fours; reach new consensus (5 min).
  4. Fours merge into eights; final consensus (5 min).
  5. Groups present their position to the class.

Tips

  • Use a question with no single right answer.
  • The consensus requirement at each stage forces genuine negotiation.
