Mini-Saga

writingvocabularyaccuracypracticeindividualnone prep20-30 min

Students write a complete story in exactly 50 words.

Procedure

  1. Explain the constraint: a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end — in exactly 50 words.
  2. Students draft freely first (no word limit).
  3. Edit ruthlessly: cut unnecessary words, combine sentences, find shorter synonyms.
  4. Count words and adjust until exactly 50.
  5. Share and read each other's mini-sagas.

Tips

  • The constraint forces careful word choice and editing — every word must earn its place.
  • Display the best ones on the classroom wall.
