Structured debate format for developing argumentation and critical thinking.
Procedure
- Divide class into teams and assign positions (for/against) randomly.
- Give 5 minutes preparation time for arguments.
- Opening statements: 3 minutes each team.
- Rebuttals: 2 minutes each team.
- Closing arguments: 3 minutes each team.
- Class votes on most persuasive team.
Tips
- Assign positions randomly so students argue ideas, not personal beliefs.
- Use talking tokens or a moderator to manage turn-taking.
- Set ground rules: attack ideas, not people.
- Give quieter students specific roles (timekeeper, summariser) to ensure participation.
