Discussion and Debate

speakingcommunicationmainsmall-grouplow prep20-30 minTBLT

Structured debate format for developing argumentation and critical thinking.

Procedure

  1. Divide class into teams and assign positions (for/against) randomly.
  2. Give 5 minutes preparation time for arguments.
  3. Opening statements: 3 minutes each team.
  4. Rebuttals: 2 minutes each team.
  5. Closing arguments: 3 minutes each team.
  6. Class votes on most persuasive team.

Tips

  • Assign positions randomly so students argue ideas, not personal beliefs.
  • Use talking tokens or a moderator to manage turn-taking.
  • Set ground rules: attack ideas, not people.
  • Give quieter students specific roles (timekeeper, summariser) to ensure participation.
