Students race to locate called-out vocabulary items within a previously studied reading text.

Procedure

  1. Tell students to look at a reading text they have recently worked on (print or digital) from which you taught new vocabulary.
  2. Call out one vocabulary item and challenge students to find it in the text. Students raise their hands when they find it and may underline/highlight the sentence or phrase where it appears.
  3. When more than half the class has raised their hands, move to the next item. Reassure students it's fine if they don't find every item immediately.
  4. After going through 7-10 items, stop.
  5. Call out each item again. This time, a student who found it reads out the immediate context (the sentence or phrase). Students who missed it can now locate it.

Tips

  • Also practises scanning skills and indirectly reviews text content.
  • Students can take turns calling out items instead of the teacher.
  • With monolingual classes, call out L1 translations and have students find the English equivalents.
  • Don't do too many items — it can get tedious. Stick to 7-10, and repeat with different items in another lesson.
