Students race to locate called-out vocabulary items within a previously studied reading text.
Procedure
- Tell students to look at a reading text they have recently worked on (print or digital) from which you taught new vocabulary.
- Call out one vocabulary item and challenge students to find it in the text. Students raise their hands when they find it and may underline/highlight the sentence or phrase where it appears.
- When more than half the class has raised their hands, move to the next item. Reassure students it's fine if they don't find every item immediately.
- After going through 7-10 items, stop.
- Call out each item again. This time, a student who found it reads out the immediate context (the sentence or phrase). Students who missed it can now locate it.
Tips
- Also practises scanning skills and indirectly reviews text content.
- Students can take turns calling out items instead of the teacher.
- With monolingual classes, call out L1 translations and have students find the English equivalents.
- Don't do too many items — it can get tedious. Stick to 7-10, and repeat with different items in another lesson.
