Narrow Listening

Students listen to multiple recordings on the same topic by different speakers.

Procedure

  1. Collect 3-5 short recordings (1-3 min each) on the same topic but by different speakers.
  2. Students listen to all recordings over one or more sessions.
  3. After each, note key points and new vocabulary.
  4. After all recordings, summarise the topic drawing from all sources.
  5. Discuss what was similar/different across speakers.

Tips

  • Same-topic listening recycles vocabulary naturally — each new recording reinforces words from the previous one.
  • Works well with podcast clips, news reports, or interviews.
