Text Mapping

readingwritingaccuracymainindividuallow prep15-20 min

Students create a visual map of a text's structure: story mountain, flowchart, or argument map.

Procedure

  1. Students read the text.
  2. Choose an appropriate visual format (story mountain for narratives, flowchart for processes, argument map for essays).
  3. Map the text's structure visually.
  4. Compare maps in pairs.
  5. Use the map as a template for writing a similar text type.

Tips

  • The map makes invisible text organisation visible — and reusable.
  • Step 5 is where the real payoff is.
