Guided Writing
writinggrammaraccuracypracticeindividualhigh prep20-30 min
Structured writing tasks where part of the work is already done, letting learners focus on accuracy.
Difficulty Progression
- Copy the text -- basic letter and word formation.
- Write from dictation -- listening-to-writing bridge.
- Copy with small changes -- minor word substitutions (e.g. change a name).
- Fill blanks with given words -- vocabulary and grammar slot-filling.
- Fill blanks with own words -- more independent language choice.
- Copy with substantial changes -- complex transformations (e.g. change tense, change subject).
- Dictogloss -- listen to text, reconstruct from memory in groups.
Procedure
- Assess learner level and assign the appropriate difficulty step.
- Learner completes the task, highlighting any changes made.
- Teacher gives quick, focused feedback on accuracy.
- Track progress in a chronological portfolio; advance when accuracy is consistent.
Tips
- Most effective at elementary/low-intermediate levels (A1-A2) where learners would struggle with free writing.
- Changes should require understanding the content, not just mechanical substitution.
- Graduate learners toward extensive writing as soon as accuracy allows.
