Photo Scavenger Hunt

Teams race to photograph items from a checklist, generating spontaneous discussion as they plan, delegate, and problem-solve together.
Procedure
- Prepare a checklist of 15–25 things to photograph (mix concrete and abstract — e.g. something you can recycle, somewhere relaxing, a person wearing green). Adjust for location and level.
- Rules: One camera/phone per team. All photos must be taken today. No staged drawings. Penalty for mistakes (e.g. +5 min to total time).
- Plan: Give teams 3–5 minutes to discuss strategy — where to go first, how to divide tasks.
- Hunt: Teams go out and photograph everything on the list. First team back with all correct photos wins. Teacher stays in the classroom as home base.
- Review: Check each team's photos against the list. Apply time penalties for errors.
- Present (optional): Each team member picks their favourite photo and explains it in 2–3 sentences.
Variations
- In-class version: Use magazine cutouts or online image searches instead of cameras for rainy days or young learners.
- Vocabulary review: Make checklist items target recently studied vocabulary (e.g. after a unit on food: something sweet, something you peel, a grain).
- Presentation extension: Teams create a short slideshow of their best photos and present to the class.
Tips
- Best for teens and adults — teacher can't directly supervise all groups outdoors, so set clear boundaries and a return time.
- Keep the checklist mix of easy and challenging items so all levels contribute.
- Include at least one item requiring the whole group (e.g. a photo of all team members) to prevent one person doing everything alone.
