Retelling

speakingreadingfluencypracticepairslow prep15-20 minTBLT

Students read or listen to a text, then retell it to a partner from memory.

Procedure

  1. Students read a short text (or listen to a recording).
  2. Put the text away.
  3. Retell the key content to a partner from memory.
  4. Partner asks clarification questions.
  5. Optional: retell to a second and third partner for fluency gains.

Tips

  • Combine with 4-3-2 timing for maximum fluency benefit.
  • The retelling doesn't need to be word-for-word — key information is the goal.
