Collective Story Writing

Students collaboratively write stories by passing folded "books" around the class, each person contributing a title, illustration, or paragraph.
Procedure
- Give each student a blank piece of A4 paper. They fold it in half to make a "book."
- Students write a story title at the top of their book (30-second time limit). Encourage creativity.
- Students pass their book to the person next to them. That person draws a front-cover picture based on the title.
- Pass again. The next student writes the first sentence or short paragraph (depending on level).
- Continue passing and adding to the story several more times, depending on available time. Each round, the new writer continues the story.
- When the books return to their original owners (or time is up), read the stories aloud. Display the best ones in a class library.
Tips
- Anonymity encourages risk-taking, especially helpful for students who lack confidence in writing
- The resulting stories can be used for follow-up grammar, vocabulary, or reading comprehension work
- Variation: use the same format for collaborative essays (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion)
- Particularly effective in creating a safe platform for creative exploration
