Secret Topic

speakinglisteningfluencycommunicationmainwhole-classnone prep10-15 min

Two students discuss a topic without naming it while the rest of the class listens and tries to figure out what it is, joining the conversation when they think they know.

Procedure

  1. Two students agree on a topic without telling the rest of the class.
  2. They start discussing their topic without mentioning it directly. The others listen. Anyone who thinks they know the topic joins the conversation. When about a third to half of the class have joined in, the game stops.

Tips

  • The first time, demonstrate as one of the speakers yourself with a confident student.
  • To make it easier and more fun, agree on a code word (e.g., "coffeepot" or "jackanory") that speakers substitute whenever they want to mention the topic.
  • Variation: students who think they know must write it on paper and show the two speakers before being allowed to join.
  • Can be played in teams with points awarded for the number of team members who figure it out.
  • Practises vague language (for speakers) and interpretation of vague language (for listeners) — useful real-life skills.
  • Best suited for upper-intermediate to advanced levels.
