Text Summary Challenge
readingwritingaccuracypracticepairsnone prep15-20 minTBLT
Pairs re-read a text, take up to 10 words of notes, then summarize it in an exact word count — the precision constraint forces juggling of grammar and vocabulary.
Procedure
- Pairs re-read a previously studied text.
- Each pair takes up to 10 words of notes only.
- Put the text away. Write a summary in exactly N words (teacher sets the number).
- Pairs read out summaries to compare.
- Optional: reduce the word count by a set amount and rewrite.
Tips
- To set the right word count: write a summary yourself first, count your words, and use that number.
- The exact word constraint is the key — students must rephrase, compress, and rethink grammar to hit the target.
- Reducing the word count further in a second round deepens the linguistic challenge.
- A good form-focused recycling activity after comprehension work.
