Prepared Talks
speakingfluencymainwhole-classmedium prep20-30 min
Learners prepare, practise, and deliver a spoken monologue without reading from a script.
Procedure
- Choose or assign a topic relevant to learners' real needs.
- Brainstorm ideas; write a full version (~150 words per minute of speaking).
- Teacher checks written version for accuracy and suggests improvements.
- Practise delivery progressively: individual, then to one partner, then small group.
- Present to the whole class without script (cue cards or slides allowed).
- Audience asks questions.
Tips
- Aim for ~150 words/minute speaking rate; a 5-minute talk needs ~750 words written.
- Use a pyramid structure: each repetition removes more support (full script, notes only, cue cards, nothing).
- Have peers check written versions before teacher review to save feedback time.
