Speed Reading

readingfluencypracticeindividualmedium prep15-20 min

Students read easy passages under time pressure and chart their words-per-minute progress.

Procedure

  1. Give students a short, easy passage (200-300 words, well below their level).
  2. Start timer — students read as quickly as possible.
  3. Stop timer — students note their time.
  4. Answer 5-10 comprehension questions (must score 70%+).
  5. Calculate words-per-minute and plot on a progress graph.

Tips

  • If comprehension drops below 70%, the text is too hard or the student is skipping.
  • The goal is increasing speed on EASY material, not struggling with hard texts.
