Beep Cloze
listeningaccuracypracticewhole-classlow prep10-15 minTBLT
Teacher reads a familiar text aloud, replacing target phrases with "beep." Students listen and write down the missing phrase from memory — a quick, engaging way to recycle language from a studied text.
Procedure
- Choose phrases to remove from a previously studied text (e.g., all number phrases, all time expressions, all verbs).
- Write the removed items on the board in random order.
- Students turn their texts face down.
- Read the text aloud at natural speed, saying "beep" in place of each removed phrase. Pause briefly after each beep.
- Students write down which phrase goes in each gap.
- Students compare with a partner.
- Re-read the original text (or students check their own copies).
Tips
- No preparation of printed materials needed — just the text and a board.
- The board list provides scaffolding; for a harder version, don't display the list.
- Works with any category of language: numbers, collocations, prepositions, verb forms.
- Quick and easy to do — ideal for recycling a text from a previous lesson.
