Build Challenge

Groups build something from simple materials, then present and justify their creation — generating rich discussion through planning, negotiation, and persuasion.
Procedure
- Prepare materials: Give each group identical sets of simple supplies (cups, straws, pipe cleaners, uncooked spaghetti, tape, paper, etc.).
- Brief: Groups have a set time (10–20 min) to build something using only their materials. They decide together what to build.
- Plan and build: Groups discuss, negotiate roles, and construct their object. Teacher monitors and notes language use.
- Present: Each group introduces their creation — what it is, how it works, and why it's useful.
- Q&A: Other groups ask follow-up questions. Class votes on the most creative or useful build.
Variations
- Constrained build: Specify the goal (tallest tower, strongest bridge, most useful invention) to add a competitive element.
- Warm-up: Before building, give groups 2–3 common objects and ask them to brainstorm five unusual uses for each — gets creative thinking going.
- Add a pitch: Groups must "sell" their product to the class, practising persuasive language.
Tips
- Keep material sets identical so the focus stays on language and creativity, not resources.
- Set a visible countdown timer — time pressure drives negotiation and decision-making talk.
- For higher levels, have groups discuss the process afterwards: what went well, what they'd change, who led and why.
